Park scene from We Become What We Behold: circles and squares under a tree, with a news chyron on the television.

News desks

The Republia Times, 2012, by Lucas Pope, puts you at a newspaper under pressure, with your family used as leverage. It is free in the browser. The likeness is the job: you choose what the public sees, and the public changes. It is longer and more literal than the park.

The New York Times Simulator, 2024, by Molleindustria, is a free itch game about editing a front page, about how a front page frames the news. The likeness is the headline as a weapon. The Westport Independent, 2016, developed and currently published by Double Zero One Zero on Steam, is a larger censorship simulator, currently listed free. The developer and store pages linked below are the references. I do not paste a review score as if I measured it.

Short browser fables

Loved, 2010, by Alexander Ocias, is a browser platformer whose narrator argues with you about obedience. The likeness is the five-minute moral argument, not the camera. Parable of the Polygons, by Nicky Case and Vi Hart, is shapes and bias, and it is the clearest sibling in Case's own catalog. The Evolution of Trust, also by Case, is a free browser essay on cooperation. Coming Out Simulator 2014 is Case's earlier public-domain story, and it does branch, which this park refuses to do.

Sort the Court, 2015, by Graebor, is a yes-or-no throne from Ludum Dare. The likeness is the tiny choice that snowballs. It is not about media.

What I left out

I left out generic 'art games' lists and anything I could not tie to a page above. If the thing you remember is this park, you do not need a neighbor. Play the original. If the thing you remember is Roblox, read Say Cheese first. Case's other work is summarized on Nicky Case.

Opening view of the park from Nicky Case's public post-mortem still.

FAQ

Is Say Cheese one of these?

It is a Roblox adaptation, not a recommendation in this list. It has its own page because people confuse the two.

Are these all by Nicky Case?

No. Polygons and The Evolution of Trust are. The Republia Times is Lucas Pope. The New York Times Simulator is Molleindustria. Loved is Alexander Ocias.

Which ones are free in a browser?

Republia Times, the Times Simulator on itch, Loved, Polygons, Evolution of Trust, Coming Out Simulator, and Sort the Court all have browser builds. The Westport Independent is listed free on Steam, outside the browser list.
